Social Responsibility and OAKEA
OAKEA aims to be an ethically, socially and environmentally conscious company. Our furniture is affordable, but this does not have to come at an environmental or ethical cost. At OAKEA we believe it is possible to produce quality Oak and Pine Furniture and be a responsible manufacturer.
Wood will go through many stages from the forest through to the home. When the wood is environmentally sourced it can receive a certificate, the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) Chain of Custody certificate follows the wood through its journey, ensuring that it is not mixed with unknown wood and that the final product is made entirely of certifiable environmentally sourced wood.
"FSC is a global, not-for-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of responsible forest management worldwide.” FSC International
An example is the Pine of the Somerset Range. It is sourced from New Zealand and supplied by Craigpine Timber Ltd. The final container arrives with an FSC tracking number (CPF1.543-9909391 & CPF1.543-8767676 for the most recent deliveries), and a Chain of Custody Certificate number (SGSHK-COC-010751 for the same delivery). The Chain of Custody Certificate means that the customer can be confident when they buy a Somerset item that the Pine is from Craigpine Timber, that it is from New Zealand, and that it is environmentally sourced. If at any stage is the process the wood could have been mixed with non-certified wood, the certificate is withdrawn. So you know when you take your beautiful new Somerset Pine Dressing Table or Bed home you can be confident of where your furniture has come from.
The conditions in which the furniture is manufactured are also important, OAKEA's MD, Henrik Pontoppidan will visit and inspect the factories, in person, to check the working conditions, and health and safety precautions.
